Day 61 of Raw - How to Open Young Coconuts

Young Coconuts! YUM, YUM!!!

Many raw food recipes call for young coconuts. I'd never seen them before we started eating raw. Now they've become a staple.

You can get young coconuts at most Asian food stores like Hong Kong Food market - this is the cheapest place to get them. We've also seen them at Whole Foods and Fiesta. I'm sure they are probably at many other stores too. Look in your produce section.

The meat in a young coconut is not a hard white meat like brown coconuts. Meat in young coconuts is very soft and delicious. It's used for everything from soups to desserts to smoothies.

Here is a wonderful site to learn how to open these beauties - http://www.rawguru.com/html/openyoungcoconut.html

And if you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, you can watch them open the coconut in action. Just allow enough time for the film to load and play. The music is fun to listen to as well.

Enjoy your delicious coconuts!!! I'm going to go have some coconut milk right now - right out of the coconut itself with a straw!
