Day 57 of Raw - Glorious Grapefruit!

Did you know that grapefruit helps to break up and flush out cellulite stored in the body?
I've come across this fact time and time again and since I've found out that losing weight when you get older doesn't necessarily mean you will also lose cellulite like you did when you were younger, needless to say, I decided to get more grapefruit in my diet.
I went to Sam's the other day and bought a big bag of huge, beautiful grapefruit. They are truly gorgeous.
I've now figured out how to put those grapefruit to DELICIOUS use! I've discovered making grapefruit smoothies. Now hold on before you wrinkle your nose! Even Mr. Chris, the Smoothie Connoisseur, said it tasted really good.
Here's the simple recipe: ice, 1 banana, peeled, 1 grapefruit - whole - peeled, and get some of the thick white layer off, about 1 TBS of honey and a bit of water. I use oxy water. I put the ingredients in my Vita Mix in the order I listed and blend it all up to smoothie consistency. I don't know if a regular blender will work with this, maybe it will, if it's powerful. Or maybe you have a smoothie maker.
We bought our Vita Mix several years ago and have not ever regretted it. It's a workhorse and when you pro-rate the cost of this very powerful machine over several years, it is really a bargain. I don't think blenders last that long. I doubted its ability to continue to crush ice to a fine consistancy thru the life of the machine but it still breaks it up as fine as the day we bought it. And if you are on the Raw food diet, you'll use the Vita Mix daily, making smoothies, warm soups, nut butters, sorbets, and the list goes on. If you were to only use it to make a few nut butters, you've made back the cost of that Vita Mix - no problem!!
Anyway, just thought I'd share that grapefruit gem fact with you. Try it, it's delicious! Hope everyone has a great Memorial Day and don't forget to take a quiet moment to thank those who've fought for our wonderful USA!
Here's some more interesting grapefruit facts taken as an excerpt from MarketWire:
Grapefruit Puts the Squeeze on Low Carb Diets
WINTER HAVEN, FL -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 11/04/2003 -- Florida Grapefruit may soon squeeze out Atkins and other low-carb diets as a safer and easier way to avoid carbohydrates.
"Grapefruit contains key compounds that inhibit an enzyme in the digestive track, preventing the absorption of excess dietary fats and carbohydrates," says biochemical researcher Daryl Thompson, who initiated the grapefruit diet study with Scripps Research Clinic. "So, by eating grapefruit, you can lose weight without altering your diet at all."
Other studies at Johns Hopkins University and Chapel Hill School of Medicine also show that Florida grapefruit is key to reducing symptoms of metabolic syndrome (Syndrome X), which includes high cholesterol, insulin resistance, hypertension and obesity.
